Two Days, Two Logos: Our Photo Mosaics at the Parents as Teachers International Conference

Last week, PDX Photo Lounge was at the Oregon Convention Center for the 2026 Parents as Teachers International Conference (PATCON26), building two giant photo mosaics, one per day, made entirely from the faces of the people attending. It is one of the largest conference activations we have produced, and a perfect fit for an event built around community.

Parents as Teachers chose Portland to host its annual international conference, held October 5 to 8, 2026, under the theme "Navigate." More than 2,000 home visiting professionals, early childhood leaders, researchers, and family advocates traveled from across the country and around the world to be here. We are honored to help them see, quite literally, the community they are part of.

Who Parents as Teachers Is

Parents as Teachers is a nonprofit and one of the leading evidence-based early childhood home visiting models in the United States. Its trained professionals make regular home visits to families from pregnancy through kindergarten, helping parents and caregivers become their child's best first teacher. The organization serves more than 188,000 families a year across all 50 states and internationally.

The people in the halls this week are the ones doing that work: sitting on living room floors, answering hard questions, and showing up for families week after week. A conference like this is one of the few times they get to be in the same room together.

How a Photo Mosaic Wall Works

A photo mosaic wall turns hundreds of individual guest photos into one large image, usually a logo or brand graphic. Here is how it comes together at a conference like PATCON26:

  1. Guests stop by the booth and have their photo taken.

  2. Each photo is printed as a tile. Our software subtly tints every print to match its exact spot in the final design, so each one carries a small piece of the overall picture.

  3. Guests place their own tile on the numbered grid on the wall.

  4. The image appears. Early in the day the wall looks like a scattered patchwork of smiling faces. By the afternoon, the design starts to pop out, and by the end of the day the full image is complete.

That last part is what makes mosaics so engaging at a conference. People come back between sessions to check progress, point out their own photo, and find their colleagues. It gives attendees a reason to gather, and it gives the organization a finished piece of art built by its own community.

Day One: The Parents as Teachers Logo Mosaic

On the first day, attendees are building the Parents as Teachers brand logo. It is a fitting start. The logo represents the organization every person here works for or partners with, and seeing it assembled from thousands of individual faces captures what Parents as Teachers really is: not a headquarters, but a network of people serving families in their own communities.

Day Two: The PATCON26 Conference Logo Mosaic

On the second day, the wall becomes the logo for the conference itself. Where the first mosaic celebrates the organization, the second one marks this specific moment: a few days in Portland when professionals from around the world came together to learn, connect, and navigate what comes next for family support and early learning.

Two walls, two days, two different stories, both told by the same community.

Why Photo Mosaic Walls Work So Well for Conferences and Nonprofits

We have produced photo activations at more than 1,000 events since 2008, from corporate events and trade shows to galas and community fundraisers, and photo mosaics remain one of our favorite options for conferences and mission-driven organizations. A few reasons:

  • Everyone is part of the final product. A mosaic is not about one keynote speaker or one sponsor. Every attendee who participates is literally in the picture.

  • It reinforces the brand without feeling like advertising. Attendees build the logo themselves, so it becomes something they feel ownership of.

  • It creates a natural gathering spot. The wall draws people back throughout the day, which encourages conversations and networking between sessions.

  • The organization keeps a lasting keepsake. A finished mosaic can be displayed at headquarters, featured in annual reports, or shared with donors and staff long after the event ends.

Photo Mosaic Wall FAQs

How many photos does a photo mosaic wall need? It depends on the size of the wall and the detail in the design. A conference mosaic typically uses several hundred photos, which is why multi-day events with large attendance, like PATCON26, are ideal.

How long does it take to complete a mosaic? Most event mosaics are designed to fill in over the course of the event, often a single day. Planning one mosaic per day, as we did here, keeps the wall fresh and gives attendees a reason to come back.

Can the mosaic be our logo? Yes. Logos are the most popular choice for conferences and corporate events. We can also build a mosaic from a conference theme graphic, a sponsor design, or a custom image.

Where do the photos come from? Photos can come from a photo booth, a roaming event photographer, or social media hashtags, depending on how you want guests to participate.

Do you bring photo mosaic walls to the Oregon Convention Center? Yes. We regularly work at the Oregon Convention Center and venues throughout Portland and the Pacific Northwest, and we travel for conferences elsewhere as well.

Can we have a digital photo mosaic wall? Yes, the wall can be both physical and digital. We can display the digital version of the wall on any screen. The digital wall animates and adds movement to the experience. You can also book a digital only wall without the physical option.
